Vintage Cigarette Ads.

The top two Camel ads are from 1937. The bottom two are from the early 60s. Amazing. Camel got a world champion hurdler and a smoke-eater (nice irony) to endorse the digestive qualities of a particular brand of cigarette. Then, we have a downtime clown. And finally, Pall Mall compares the taste of its cigs to a watermelon. Pall Mall never made candy cigarettes, did they?

These are so beautiful, it makes my teeth hurt. I have a couple myself, including one with various sports stars (inc. Lou Gehrig) that states "Camels don't get your wind." Keith Hernandez would approve. And I love the backstage shot of Jerry Lewis filming "The Day the Clown Cried."

Is it just me or does the clown look like Dubya? Seriously.

as the writer of record for Pall Mall, I can say with authority that nothing goes better with watermelon than a fresh, unfiltered Pall Mall.

Hey, the later Camel ad might not have the big names and fancy associations of the early ones, but at least the advertisers learned to stop talking about how costly it was.
