"Nothing You Could Say Can Tear Me Away From My, uh, Guy"

(click ad to read copy)
Yesterday's pedophilic trip down memory lane led me to this powerfully effective ad for PMS drug Midol scanned from a 1974 Tiger Beat.
The enlightening copy starts "Be the you he likes. Good to be around, any day of the month." That's right girls—be the you HE likes. Even if your Guy (note cap "G" subservient ones) wears patchwork-quilt shirts and happens to look a bit like Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club.

Whenever I hear mention of Ally Sheedy, I am reminded of a safe-sex PSA she did in the 90's.

"Hiii, I'm Allay Sheeday. Don't haave saahx. If you do have saahx, use a condom. Tell them Iii told you!"

By the 90s, Sheedy was NOT considered a teen icon. The implication that one could compel someone do something because Ally Sheedy said so amuses me to this day.

Not for nothing but back in those days, Midol really did have some good stuff in it. Remember Molly Ringwald's big sister in 'Sixteen Candles' when she took the "muscle relaxers" before her wedding ceremony? Midol used to do that. Seriously.
It was cool because guys thought taking Midol would somehow give them womanly qualities (HORRORS!) so it was like our own little secret. Nowdays, Midol's just Tylenol with a diuretic in it. Booooo!
